How to transition your summer wardrobe

How to transition your summer wardrobe

.. to slightly non summer weather.

Let's be real. If you live in Queensland most of your wardrobe is probably geared towards our summer weather. It's been Autumn for a couple of weeks now but we've only been experiencing autumn for about 3 days now. I love winter fashion (I think I've definitely shared this before) but owning a lot of winter clothing just isn't practical. I don't get enough of a chance to really wear it to justify how much I purchase it.

My go-to piece of advice for transitioning your summer outfits to autumn outfits (which I am showcasing in this look) is to change up your shoes and add some black opaque tights to dresses. I will caution adding tights to every single dress, particularly those super summery dresses as sometimes it just doesn't work. Here's my tips on how to make tights and dresses work and not just like you've.. well.. tried to make your summer outfits work in winter!

  • Watch that summer length and ensure your dress isn't too short (too much tights is a weird thing)
  • Avoid florals (we don't usually wear a lot of floral prints in winter so it stands out)
  • Just avoid light colours altogether really (we also don't wear a lot of white in winter and it can look odd with your black tights)
  • I also opt for thicker fabrics to pair with tights as the thin ones scream summer

This is typically what I look for in a summer dress anyway (thicker fabric has better structure so it's more flattering and the same goes with darker colours) so I'm usually pretty safe to make my summer dresses work in other seasons. If you want to make your clothes last try thinking through when buying a summer dress whether you could make it work with tights in autumn!

I bought this dress towards the end of summer and only got to wear it a couple of times before the weather started to cool down and so I thought I'd see how I could make it last past summer and into autumn.

As it gets cooler I know I could easily add a great jacket (I'm on the hunt for the perfect black leather jacket at the moment) or scarf to this outfit and still make it work even in winter (QLD perks).
